The importance of childhood experiences in shaping skills and behavior is recognized by designer Cindy Kwok of Husky Design. She has created an electric scooter that goes beyond being just a toy, offering children the opportunity to learn to ride both standing and sitting-style scooters. This innovative vehicle features an accelerator, headlight, horn, and a hybrid design that allows for alternating between sitting and standing positions.

Design and Transformation

The 2-in-1 design of the scooter provides children with a versatile riding experience. In the seated mode, the main stem folds downwards to become a seat, while the handlebars attach to the front fairing above the headlight. Transitioning to standing mode involves detaching the handlebars and lifting the seat into a vertical position. Once the seat is secured vertically, the handlebars are clamped on top, transforming the scooter into a standing position, resembling last-mile e-scooters found in urban settings. This three-wheeled design prioritizes stability, eliminating the need for children to learn the balancing required on a bicycle, which is typically reserved for older kids.

Functionality and Controls

The e-scooter is equipped with a rear-wheel motor activated by a large pedal switch on the scooter’s rear. A ‘Go’ button on the platform’s front manages acceleration (releasing it applies the brakes), and the handlebars offer steer-by-wire functionality, which can be directly plugged in for the sitting mode or indirectly for the standing mode. The handlebars also feature dedicated buttons to control the headlight and sound the e-scooter’s horn, helping children develop proper on-road practices.

Realistic Learning Experience

While the e-scooter is currently in the concept stage, it is designed with safety in mind, suggesting it won’t have a very high top speed. Like most toy vehicles, this e-scooter is intended for slow, steady play, incorporating real-world features and details to teach children essential riding techniques and on-road etiquette through interactive playtime.
