Hyundai IONIQ 6 Refresh: New Design, Faster Charging, and Extended Range

Hyundai is gearing up to refresh its electric fastback, the IONIQ 6. The upcoming upgrade promises a design overhaul, improved charging speeds, and an extended range. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming.

A Look Back at the IONIQ 6

Launched in July 2022, the IONIQ 6 joined the IONIQ 5 as Hyundai’s second EV based on the E-GMP platform. The IONIQ 6 has already made waves as one of the most energy-efficient EVs on the market. According to the US Department of Energy, the 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 6 Long Range RWD (with 18″ wheels) is the most efficient EV in the US this year, boasting 140 MPGe (combined).

What’s New in the IONIQ 6 Upgrade?

Despite its efficiency, Hyundai isn’t resting on its laurels. Following the footsteps of the IONIQ 5 refresh introduced in Korea last March, the IONIQ 6 is set to receive several enhancements.

Battery and Range

The refreshed IONIQ 5 features an upgraded 84 kWh battery, up from the previous 77.4 kWh. This battery boost has increased its range to 301 miles (485 km) in Korea, compared to 285 miles (459 km) in the older model.

Charging Speeds

Charging speeds have also improved, with the refreshed IONIQ 5 capable of charging from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. This faster charging capability is expected to carry over to the IONIQ 6.

Design Changes

One of the most noticeable changes in the new IONIQ 6 will be its front-end design. Addressing customer feedback, Hyundai is introducing new headlights similar to those on the new Sonata. However, due to the placement of the logo, the headlights will appear separate rather than connected.

Additionally, the IONIQ 6 will feature upgraded wheels, a redesigned rear end, and a revamped interior.

Future Prospects

The IONIQ 6 was Hyundai’s first EV with a range exceeding 600 km (373 mi) in Korea. The upgraded model aims to push this even further, potentially reaching up to 700 km (435 mi).

Launch Timeline

Hyundai plans to launch the refreshed IONIQ 6 next May, followed by a sporty N model in September. The new IONIQ 5 will be the first vehicle produced at Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia, set to begin production later this year. The IONIQ 6 may also join this production line post-launch.

Stay tuned for more updates on Hyundai’s upgraded EV fastback.
