Crafting in Solitude
When it comes to motorcycle enthusiasts, the common perception is that they crave attention with flashy, loud bikes. However, this stereotype doesn’t always hold true. Some custom bike builders are introverts who work quietly behind the scenes. One such craftsman in Canada takes this to another level. Remaining unknown to most, Sally’s Speed Shop in Canada consistently produces remarkable creations. Among them is the latest masterpiece, a breathtaking Honda C70, boasting sleek bodywork and a unique electric powertrain.

A Silent Artist’s Sanctuary
In today’s age of influencers and fame-seekers, it’s refreshing to discover individuals who let their work speak for itself. Sally’s Speed Shop, located in British Columbia, Canada, is more than just a workshop for crafting cool custom motorcycles. It’s a haven for creativity, where surfboards, furniture, and various forms of art are born. In this context, the 1981 Honda C70 Passport serves as another canvas for artistic expression.

The Humble Beginnings of the Honda Cub
The Honda Cub is as common as a piece of paper, with over 100 million units produced. Surprisingly, its existence was almost cut short, as Soichiro Honda initially focused on racing during a European research and development trip. Fortunately, Takeo Fujisawa, Honda’s right-hand man, recognized the potential for “a two-wheeler for everyman.” Thus, the Cub project received the green light, and history was made. Sally’s Speed Shop, seventy years later, found a Cub in its workshop, which was about to undergo a remarkable transformation.

Creating the Ultra-Clean Chassis
Sally’s vision for the Cub included an ultra-clean chassis. Achieving this required extensive modifications to the stock frame, resulting in a structure that maintained its strength while shedding unnecessary bulk. Accommodating larger rims also became part of the plan, necessitating the creation of a custom inner fender and an innovative anti-swingarm solution to prevent contact with the bodywork.

Mastering Streamlined Bodywork
Crafting the beautiful streamlined bodywork was a meticulous process. It began with the construction of a steel frame to support the hand-laid mold. Precision was essential to ensure the desired outcome. Once perfected, the mold was used to produce the final epoxy composite components that would transform the Cub’s appearance.

A Front-End Transformation
Sally aimed to give the Cub’s front end an equally special touch. He initially crafted a leaf spring front suspension but eventually opted for a springer front end sourced from Kepspeed, tailored for the Cub lineup. Adjustments were made to ensure flawless operation. The front wheel was custom-built using a Honda hub from an early model, featuring 72 twisted spokes and 18-inch rims, all elegantly powder-coated in black.

Timeless Elegance in Black
For a classic touch, Sally chose the timeless combination of black with polished trim. All the meticulously crafted aluminum components, including the front, punched cover, the slim trim piece encircling the body, and the vintage-inspired faux louvers, contribute to the bike’s vintage car aesthetic. The seat itself was shaped from a sheet of 3/8-inch aluminum, supported by a cantilevered spring, and finished with carefully sourced leather stitched to match the grips.

Embracing the Electric Revolution
Twisting the right-hand grip on the polished flat bars, the Cub silently roars to life. Its once 6hp petrol engine has been replaced with an 8000-watt electric hub motor hidden within the body, along with all supporting components and wiring. This transformation aligns with Fujisawa’s vision of hiding the engine, hoses, and wires within a sleek cover.

A One-of-a-Kind Rolling Artwork
Sally’s Cub has evolved from a simple commuter machine into a fusion of old and new, resulting in a truly unique rolling work of art that captivates with its elegance and innovation.
